As late-stage venture investors since 1999, we are fortunate to have been a part of many iconic companies’ IPOs, including Salesforce, Facebook, Tableau, Datadog and many others. Because of this experience, entrepreneurs and executives often ask us about public companies: When is a company ready to go public? What does best-in-class look like? What is the relationship between growth, profitability and valuation?
In today’s fast moving market, we feel it’s more important than ever to enable entrepreneurs and executives to quickly answer these essential questions on their own time.
However, that’s easier said than done — today, there is a lack of resources with neatly packaged, comprehensive, free public company information. While Google Finance has real-time share price and market cap quotes, they lack other basics such as valuation multiples and key operating metrics. Almost all comprehensive public company data sits behind the paywalls of data services or in research reports distributed through investment banks that generally only reach institutional clients in the form of static PowerPoint presentations. The source data is scattered across SEC filings and earnings call transcripts and can be painful to manually collect and require experience to interpret — no wonder it sits behind paywalls.
While private companies today understand their own company data better than ever before, in most cases they lack these basic insights about their public technology peers. As a founder, CEO or executive at a hyper-growth private company, understanding not only the GAAP financial metrics, but the non-GAAP metrics and unit economics of your public peers can be another tool in the toolshed of best-in-class execution.
For these reasons, we’re excited to officially launch our Meritech Insights pages. For enterprise software and consumer internet, fintech and healthtech companies, we have one of the most comprehensive free repositories of public company metrics. These pages are fully interactive, filterable and will be updated for market prices and earnings releases frequently. Check out the pages below, and if you’d like to discuss any of this, feel free to drop us a line at firstname.lastname@example.org. Sign up here!
