While Google Finance has real-time share price and market cap quotes, they lack other basics such as valuation multiples and key operating metrics. Almost all comprehensive public company data sits behind the paywalls of data services or in research reports distributed through investment banks that generally only reach institutional clients in the form of static PowerPoint presentations. The source data is scattered across SEC filings and earnings call transcripts and can be painful to manually collect and require experience to interpret — no wonder it sits behind paywalls.
While private companies today understand their own company data better than ever before, in most cases they lack these basic insights about their public technology peers. As a founder, CEO or executive at a hyper-growth private company, understanding not only the GAAP financial metrics, but the non-GAAP metrics and unit economics of your public peers can be another tool in the toolshed of best-in-class execution.
